Sky to challenge Apple's iTunes

A new digital music service is to be launched that could challenge Apple's iTunes application, it has emerged.

Digital Spy reports that Sky is to make its own foray into the UK market by offering an mp3 streaming and download service - which may be of interest to mobile broadband customers or those with music-enabled mobile phones.

It is noted that following a period of dissatisfaction with the Apple service, Universal has entered into a deal to supply its back catalogue to Sky and it is thought that more could follow.

Commenting on the launch, Sky's chief operating officer Mike Darcey said the subscription-based service would aim to offer consumers flexibility and fulfil an existing demand for downloadable music.

"We aim to offer an easy and affordable service for all UK music fans, while ensuring that artists are properly rewarded for their creativity," he said.

Apple recently launched the App Store, an online shop where iPhone and iPod Touch users can download games and other applications.
